The Lorax.

‘The Lorax’ by Dr. Seuss grapples with some pretty heavy ideas relating sustainability, the story runs parallel with a lot of sustainability issues facing human kind now. The Onceler cuts down all the Truffula trees to make ‘Thneeds,’ he is greedy and doesn’t think about the consequences his actions will have on the area in the future, this is exactly what is happening in the world at the moment, humans are greedy and we have formed a society that needs ‘stuff’ so badly that the environment suffers for it, almost to an unreturnable point. Luckily society has noticed the suffering of the environment from our actions and has started to save it, as in the book, the Onceler realises his mistake in time and gives a boy the means to bring back the Truffula trees, and undo what the Onceler in his greed did. I think that if the Onceler were to start his Thneed business up again though, he would plant trees as he cut them down, and only cut down trees to his need, not taking it beyond what he needed. The story teaches us that we always need to be conscious of our actions and the impact they will have on the environment in the future.

  1. Good job Beth. You have hit the nail on the head about many of the issues in the film relating to current life issues. In the future, can we try to use less run on sentences. Also, a higher level concept idea is that the destruction of one part of the environment has unforeseen consequences on the others i.e. the bears, the fish, and birds. Look forward to future posts.
